SAFETY FIRST: EXPLORING NFPA 2112 STANDARDS FOR FLAME-RESISTANT CLOTHING
SAFETY FIRST
NFPA 2112 is a standard developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for protecting workers from flash fire hazards in hazardous environments. The standard outlines the minimum requirements for the design, construction, evaluation, and certification of flame-resistant clothing that will provide protection to workers in the event of an accidental flash fire.
This standard is particularly important in fields like oil and gas, chemical processing plants, and electrical utilities, where workers are exposed to risks like flash fire. The NFPA 2112 standard requires that the clothing must be tested and certified to ensure that it meets the requirements for thermal protection, flame resistance, heat resistance, and durability.
The ASTM* test methods help to ensure that flame-resistant clothing meets the minimum performance requirements specified in the NFPA 2112 standard.
The following ASTM test methods are used to gauge how well flame-resistant fabrics perform:
- ASTM D6413: FLAME RESISTANCE TEST. Standard test method for flame resistance of textiles (Vertical Test): This test measures the vertical flame resistance of a fabric to resist ignition and self-extinguish when exposed to a flame.
- AATCE 135: HEAT & THERMAL SHRINKAGE RESISTANCE. Standard test method to determine melting temperature of synthetic fibers: the thread melt test method is a simple and commonly used technique to identify the fiber content of a fabric or textile. It involves taking a small sample of the fabric and carefully pulling out a single thread or yarn. This thread is then held over a flame to observe how it reacts to the heat.
- ASTM F1930: MANIKIN TEST. Standard test method for evaluation of flame-resistant clothing for protection Against Flash Fire Simulations Using an Instrumented Manikin: This test method measures the thermal protection provided by flame-resistant clothing by using an instrumented manikin that simulates a flash fire exposure.
- ASTM F2700: THERMAL PROTECTIVE PERFORMANCE. Standard test method for unsteady-state heat transfer of flame-resistant materials for clothing: this test method evaluates the heat transfer performance of flame-resistant clothing by measuring the temperature rise of a simulated skin layer under a fabric sample exposed to a thermal energy source.
It’s important for employers and workers to understand and comply with the requirements of the NFPA 2112 standard to ensure the safety and protection of workers in hazardous environments.
